This book is for anyone who has ever felt afraid of, intimidated by, embarrassed by, or just didn't know what to say to bullies. It is quite different from anything you have read or been told before. Get back in control!
The Little Book Of Retorts is a short self-help guide for teenagers on how to beat the bullies. It suggests a fresh and different (if controversial) approach to being bullied, giving dozens of illustrated examples of what to say in reply to unpleasant comments and how to say it. It includes information on the reasons for bullying, why people become victims, techniques for dealing with fear and anxiety and where to get further help if needed.
Wendy Bollen (the pen name for Wendy Gregory) grew up with an older brother and so became skilled at delivering a witty retort in reply to an insult. She has also raised two daughters (her daughter Bianca has illustrated the book) and worked as a counselling psychologist with many hundreds of young people, whom she has helped to deal with all kinds of problems and difficulties. By far the most common problem is being bullied. She realised that the advice usually given by teachers didn’t work, so based on her own experiences and those of the young people she works with Wendy has come up with a rather different approach which empowers victims by teaching them how to stand up to a bully. She has received a lot of encouragement from the young people she works with who have tried using the retorts and have been eager to know when the book is available. These strategies work!
